The Good Green Life

Like the sound of that? I know I do! "The Good Green Life," yep, that's where we're headed, finally! We camped out 2,600 feet up on the top of Rich Mountain. Our campsite and the entire mountain was covered by a huge cloud. Walking the 4 miles to pitch our tent, my mind was racing, thinking of the possibilities of what it would be like to finally get out and live off the grid. Even if it's only partially off grid to start with.

God joke #1, it rained our first time out camping in a tent. Usually we spend about $150 a night to stay in a cabin in the woods for a week, not this time! We were ready to start braving the elements. The wind was blowing fiercely and the rain showed no signs of slowing. We had a goal in mind of camping, but Mother Nature had made some plans herself. After we were setup safe and dry in our tent, we chatted about how we'd make the move. What would we be willing to give up first? Would the property be what we were looking for? Would we see bears? Would we be far enough away from traffic, the town, the lights and sounds of the city? So many things to consider before relocating. Eventually we drifted off listening to the light tapping of the rain and whistling wind.

Ready to head out to see the land we woke up, packed up the tent and headed back down the mountain. The fog still hovered over making it hard to see 10 feet ahead of you, but by the time we got to the bottom and drove into town to meet David our realtor, the sun was shinning and the breeze was cool, it was essentially a perfect Spring day, or perfect day to start a new beginning. David drove us out to see the property. At first I was nervous, thinking after the first five minutes that he'd pull over and say, "here we are." Fortunately he drove out of town for another twenty minutes. Yep, we were going to be far enough away, but not too far from town. As we drove up the 80 yards to the house I was thrilled by what I saw! Trees, tons of them, and 9,000 square feet of garden area ready to be taken over by us!

The best part...it has solar panels already installed! Only as back up, but we'll get it setup to cover all three areas on the property. It was everything we were looking for. And, the land that went up to the ridge of the mountain as far as I could see would be owned by us, all 15 acres. Guess what's on the other side of the ridge? Forest land, that's right, the forest!

I'll be back with updates on the move and what's next on the to-do list! Wish us luck!
